Water jug basket pitched in pine with horsehair lugs / Unidentified
Essay/Description
Basket made of small coiled split yucca olla. It is made water tight by pitch covering inside and out. Also has white horse hair lugs.
Curatorial Remarks
Yucca was not used in the making of this basket. The basket was most likely made from sumac or willow. A water basket made from yucca is not common. It's purpose was for domestic tasks. The red coloring comes from a stain that was then covered in pine pitch. The crude coil construction is indicative of the Jicarilla.
