Curatorial Remarks
Date should be changed from early 20th century to ca. 1923, as per a letter from Christy to Thomas Gilcrease, in which he explains that he painted the portrait while staying at the Ketchum Hotel (now the Oil Capitol Building) in Tulsa, when the Oklahoma National Guard was activated under General Baird Markham. Markham was dispatched to Tulsa in 1923, following rising activity by the KKK, and the governor’s office was worried about a potential recurrence of the massacre of 1921.
